Sidney Lazard Elected to the ACBL Bridge Hall of Fame! By Chuck Wilkinson One of District 10"s finest, Sidney H. Lazard, has been elected as one of the two living inductees this year to the ACBL Bridge Hall of Fame. The Bridge Hall of Fame banquet and induction ceremony will take place on Thursday, August 10, 2000 in Anaheim, CA. Sidney’s accomplishments at the bridge tables are myriad. He is one of a few players who can claim NABC victories over five consecutive decades. They include two Spingolds (1958 & 1968), the Vanderbilt in 1970, two Reisingers (1960 & 1997), the Team Trials in 1968, Men’s Teams in 1977, Grand National Pairs in 1990, five Master Mixed Teams (1963, 1977, 1978, 1979, & 1982), and the Herman Trophy in 1997. He has even more second place finishes: the Spingold three times (1954, 1966, & 1973), the Vanderbilt three times (1960, 1967, & 1994), the Reisinger three times (1968, 1969, & 1975), the Men’s Teams four times (1954, 1956 1961, & 1965), the Master Mixed Teams in 1961, the Men’s Pairs in 1967, the Mixed Pairs in 1959, the Men’s Swiss in 1983, the Grand National Teams in 1987, the Open Pairs in 1997, and the Cavendish Men’s Pairs in 1957. In international competition, Sidney has two high finishes in the Bermuda Bowl (second in 1959, third in 1969), and a third in the 1998 Rosenblum Teams. He was selected to represent the United States in the first World Team Olympiad in 1960. Sidney has also contributed away from the tables. He serves on the ACBL Ethical Oversight Committee, and was named an Honorary Member of the ACBL Goodwill Committee in 1995. His latest triumph was as the Non-playing Coach for the winning team at the Bermuda Bowl in Bermuda this past January. Sidney, born in 1930, lives in New Orleans, and works as an oil and gas producer. He was known for his bold favorable vulnerability preempts and aggressive openings long before they became mainstream tactics. He backs up his aggressive style with good play. Despite his impressive bridge acumen, Sidney has always deported himself in a quiet and courteous demeanor, both to his partner and to his opponents. He is a credit to our game and this recognition is richly deserved. Chuck Wilkinson Chuck Wilkinson Phone: (601) 948-7108 |
