District 10 Goodwill Committee
by Chuck Wilkinson, District 10 Representative to the ACBL Board of Directors
December 30, 2004
The ACBL Goodwill Committee is a standing committee of members selected for their demonstration by personal example, that the strictest code of ethics and the highest standards of agreeable social conduct can be combined with effective competitive play. These are the players that make the game more enjoyable for others by their friendliness, courtesy, and high level of ethical conduct.
Annually, each district director may appoint up to two members to the Goodwill Committee. In addition, a district director may make up to two additional annual appointments to fill vacancies created by deaths of prior appointees. Appointees are lifetime members of the committee.
Here are my appointments for 2005:
John E. (Jack) Kennedy, Shreveport, LA - Other than being the husband of 5 times world champion Betty Ann, Jack is an exceptional person in his own right. He is a West Point honor graduate, a decorated World War II hero (including the silver star), and CEO of several businesses in Shreveport. As a bridge player, he is no slouch either, with over 8,000 mps and two national championships in his resume. Jack has been President of his unit 3 times and has served in many other capacities, both at the unit and district level.
Christie Sellers, Mobile, AL - Christie has served on the Unit 215 Board of Directors as Vice President and President. Her leadership in both chairs was efficient, courteous, organized and respected by all members in her unit. She promoted and supported the teaching of EASYBRIDGE!. She has also served as Club Manager of all ACBL Special Games and as the Unit 215 First Alternate representative to District meetings. She is an accomplished duplicate bridge player who not only exhibits good sportsmanship, but a person who demonstrates good fellowship, and is a joy to have as a partner.
Jeralyn Taylor, Wetumpka, AL - Jerri is always ready to do her part and more for bridge. Besides being Unit 157 (Alabama Bridge Association) President and Secretary of her local club, she teaches and directs the Monday night Pro/Am game, filling in when needed. The bridge world is much better off by having smart, even-handed and dedicated people such as Jerri in leadership positions.
Erin Wiltshire, Jackson, MS - Erin is one of those key members of every club who operates without the trappings of office. She does the small things, like providing rides to the club for elderly or handicap players, helping straighten up the club after each game, and serving as a last minute fill-in partner. Her friendly manner embodies the very description of what we all imagine a Goodwill Member to be. I suspect that she does more to promote bridge in the local club than many of us who hold leadership positions.
All members of the ACBL Goodwill Committee receive, and are thereafter entitled to wear, the official Goodwill Committee Pin. Replacement pins are available free from ACBL.
The ACBL Goodwill Committee Chairman hosts a between session reception for all members of the committee on Goodwill Day at each NABC.
The following is a list of District 10 appointments to the ACBL Goodwill Committee. This list does not include deceased members. The names of deceased members are removed so that replacement appointments can be made. If you recognize the name of a member on this list that has died, please notify me. Also, please contact me with any corrections, name changes, nominations of new members to the list, etc.
